DEPARTMENT OF DENTAL AND ORAL SURGERY
INTRODUCTION
Our department provides outpatient and inpatient care in the region. We treat 20,000 patients annually.
In our clinic, we provide care in all dental specialties (dento-alveolar surgery, implantology, prosthodontics, orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, conservative dentistry and endodontics, periodontology) as well as facial and maxillofacial surgery.
The priority areas of the dento-alveolar oral surgery are the reduction of complications (prevention of nerve injuries, prevention and treatment of alveolitis, coronectomy) associated with impacted wisdom teeth (1100-1300 cases/year), the surgical solution of obstructive diseases of the large salivary glands (40-60 cases/year) and oral surgery care for the blood-sensitive patient group (120-140 cases/year). We have extensive list of publications in these three areas.
The bone replacements are also our important area. We provide references for several manufacturers:
- NSK (Eschborn, Germany)
- PROMED (Hódmezővásárhely, Hungary)
- ORTHOSERA (Győr, Hungary).
The Orthodontic Unit provides general orthodontic care, but we deal with who require special treratments. Children born with cleft lip and palate are treated from birth by the Pécs Cleft Group. The patients born with various syndromes or genetic disorders (eg. Tourette's syndrome, Gorlin-Goltz syndrome, acromegaly, achondroplasia, aplasia) are also treated in our unit. The jaw joint dysfunction group deals with all dysfunctions which affect the musculoskeletal systems (joints, masticatory muscles). The invisible orthodontic system, based on high-tech 3D technology, is the latest method of orthodontic treatment. The orthodontic software (OrthoStudio) processes the data generated by the 3D scanner. The thin biocompatible, transparent splints are prepared at the 3D Printing and Visualisation Centre of the University of Pécs. Efficient and hygienic tooth movement is also possible with the help of splints for adult patients, too. All special orthodontic fields are listed as research topics for PhD students.
The Endodontics and conservative dentistry unit achieved outstanding results in aesthetic restorations. Clinical trials in endodontics are carried out in the determination of the implementation duration, preparation methods, removal of broken endodontic instruments, and testing of models used in endodontic education. The conservation dentistry group provides patient care in restorative dentistry and endodontic specialist care. The endodontic professional training started at our unit started in 2018. The education is supported by a full range of instrumental and diagnostic facilities. We regularly organize international professional training, where dentist colleagues may improve their skills in aesthetic dentistry and microscopic endodontic skills.
The Periodontology Unit carries out conservative and surgical treatment of periodontal disease (pocket surgery, regenerative and mucogingival surgical interventions), dental implantology, treatment of peri-implantitis and precancerous lesions. Our department is the only one in Transdanubia to offer periodontology professional training. We pay special attention to the dental screening of kidney patients and the diagnostics of autoimmune patients, in which we also conduct research.
